FAQ

How Did We Come About?

Georgia Tech Debate was founded in 2000 to elevate students' communication skills. Following a sustained period of growth and tournament victories, we formally became affiliated with Georgia Tech's School of Literature, Media, and Communication in 2022.

What Do We Compete In?

Georgia Tech Debate participates in multiple competitive debate formats; the events we emphasize are NPDA, IPDA, BP (rounds in which you are given a resolution, have a given amount of time to prepare, and then debate) and Policy (rounds in which the resolution is given before the tournament, and preparation is done collaboratively and consistently beforehand). We also compete in numerous speech events.

Who Can Become a Member?

Anyone in Undergrad at Georgia Tech is welcome! We welcome those with heavy experience and those with none at all. Our club's membership is composed of a diverse range of majors. No fees, dues or auditioning is necessary; show up and dive right in!

Where Do We Compete?

GT Debate has competed (and won!) at many tournaments across the USA, such as Harvard, Yale, UC Berkeley, and Vanderbilt. We also compete at regional tournaments in Georgia, as well as completely virtual tournaments. Tournaments are typically held on weekends, allowing for flexible school schedules.

What Is the Time Commitment for Members?

We meet Thursdays for at 6:00 PM for two hours. Meetings are not mandatory, but we strongly advise that you regularly attend if you'd like to succeed at tournaments. No fees or dues are collected.
